Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has urged Brisbane residents and visitors to pack a picnic or a football this weekend and start exploring Victoria Park which has now been reopened to the public for the first time in almost a century.
Cr Schinner said Victoria Park golf course had transitioned into 45 hectares of new inner-city parkland, marking the start of its highly-anticipated transformation.
“Now is the perfect time to pack a picnic, play a game of footy or explore on foot or with your four-legged friend what is Brisbane’s biggest new park in 50 years,” he said.
“Opening the park to the public is a major step in our plan to deliver a once-in-a generation project which will restore the park to its former glory and reconnect visitors with local history, culture and nature.
“Brisbane residents have helped shape what all 64 hectares of parkland will look like and we’re in investing $83 million over four years to start to bring this vision to life, which will eventually see waterholes and wetlands, nature playgrounds, an adventure valley and so much more.
“Importantly, the park will also involve a range of cultural and creative features – including a Visitor Centre which will explore Indigenous culture, landscape and contemporary history of the park.
“The popular putt putt course, driving range, bistro and function centre will all remain open as we deliver this transformation in stages.”
Council will be sprucing up the park with early works including taking down fences, improving pathways, tree planting and opening access to Herston busway occurring in coming months.
