Brisbane residents are being reminded to make the most of this weekend’s free sandbag collection and free green waste disposal.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said he was impressed with resident’s response to the first super sandbag weekend, with more than 15,000 sandbags collected from Council’s depots.
“Our first super sandbag weekend was a great success with thousands of residents turning up to collect free sandbags and learn from the experts how to store them and then lay them in the case of severe weather,” Cr Schrinner said.
“A third La Nina event has now been forecast and my message to residents is to be prepared.
“With two more super sandbag weekends planned (September 24, 25 and October 1,2) residents have plenty of opportunity to collect sandbags to keep at their home so they can quickly lay them out and reduce the impact of any potential flooding during severe weather.
Cr Schrinner said this weekend (September 24th and 25th) marked the final free green waste tipping at Council’s Resource Recovery Centres.
“Over the past two weekends residents have disposed of 936 tonnes, the equivalent of about three Boeing 747s, of green waste for free,” he said.
“This is a good sign that residents have been clearing their garden and gutters of debris, which minimises the risk and damage during severe weather.
“Residents correctly disposing of their green waste keeps our city clean, green and sustainable as the waste stays out of street gutters and waterways and it can all be recycled and turned into compost material.”
Cr Schrinner also reminded residents to sign up to Council’s free weather alert service.
“Our Brisbane Severe Weather Alert service is so important as it sends residents location-based warnings for severe storms, hail, flooding, destructive winds and other public safety alerts,” he said.
“Since the February flood event we have had 10,000 new registrations for the alert system, but I encourage anyone who is not registered to not delay and sign up today.
“Right now, there is also a competition running and residents who sign up before 1 December 2022 will be in the running for a range of prizes, including an all expenses paid family holiday to Tangalooma Island Resort, valued at $5000.”
