Residents and visitors can learn even more about Brisbane’s seaside towns with the newest additions to our heritage trails.
With the new Shorncliffe Heritage Trail and updated Sandgate Heritage Trail now available to the public, Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the trails help residents and visitors explore the unique history of both suburbs.
“Sandgate and the surrounds are a much-loved part of our corner of Queensland and I encourage residents and visitors to explore the area’s history through our heritage trails,” Cr Schrinner said.
“We’ve added eleven new destinations to the Sandgate Heritage Trail, each with their own important history and local significance.
“The new Shorncliffe Heritage Trail offers residents and visitors a guide to explore 21 historically significant locations throughout the suburb.
The new Shorncliffe Seaside Heritage Trail features iconic homes, and public sites including Shorncliffe Pier, Baxter’s Jetty, and Moora Park – a former entertainment precinct and historically preferred rendezvous point for visitors.
With its new stops, the Step through Sandgate Heritage Trail now has 24 historically significant sites, including commercial places dating from the 1880s-1960s.
Among these is the Decker building, owned and named after Eric Decker, a local alderman and state member who – among other legacies – voted against a parliamentarian pay rise.
Places including the Sandgate Railway Station pay homage to the area’s history in the 1800s as a popular destination for holidaymakers, picnickers, and day trippers.
Cr Schrinner said learning more about Brisbane’s heritage plays a vital role in connecting residents.
“Heritage trails offer a great way to step back and reflect on what came before,” he said.
“From Salisbury to Nudgee, Indooroopilly to Wynnum, Council’s heritage trails take people on a journey across the city.
“Brisbane’s rich cultural landscape defined our city, and it’s important that we maintain that as we shape our future.”
