One of Brisbane’s slowest-growing suburbs has been identified as a future Suburban Renewal Precinct, as plans progress to encourage more homes, sooner in Mt Gravatt and Stones Corner.
Brisbane is one of Australia’s fastest-growing cities, with more than 600 people moving to the city every week.
While Brisbane grew an average of 1.7 per cent per year between 2019 and 2024, Deagon Ward’s growth has been less than half that at 0.8 per cent.
Work to progress a new Suburban Renewal Precinct for Sandgate will progress in the new year, with community consultation expected in 2026.
Suburban Renewal Precincts are a key part of the Schrinner Council’s plan to create more housing opportunities by transforming under-utilised commercial and industrial areas into mixed-use precincts with more homes and local jobs.
Unlike the large-scale neighbourhood planning process, suburban renewal precincts focus on smaller, well-located areas that can deliver new homes and employment opportunities faster.
The Schrinner Council’s first Suburban Renewal Precinct in Stones Corner was adopted today after just 18 months, compared to an average three-year process for the past six neighbourhood plans.
The Stones Corner precinct spans core parts of Cleveland Street and Logan Road and encompasses part of Gladys Street, Hanlon Park, the Stones Corner library and the busway.
It will allow for heights up to 20-storeys in key locations and create capacity for an additional 2,300 homes.
Community consultation on the Mt Gravatt Centre Suburban Renewal Precinct Plan will also run from 14 November to 14 December 2025.
The Logan Road corridor, from Glindemann Park to the Mt Gravatt Showgrounds, includes about 1,500 homes and businesses.
The proposed plan will revitalise the precinct with new homes and a mix of cafes, restaurants, retail and services, making the most of nearby public transport and parkland.
Consultation was also recently extended on the Wynnum Suburban Renewal Precinct plan until 23 November 2025.
