The Schrinner Council will partner with Housing for Change to support new community housing in Zillmere, transforming surplus land into homes for Brisbane residents.
The project will provide safe, secure and sustainable community housing for residents in Brisbane’s north.
As the city faces a community housing shortfall, the Schrinner Council is helping clear the way for 16 new homes through the sale of 3000 square metres at 39 Jennings Street.
The remaining 13,600 square metres of land at the Jennings Street site will continue to be used for Council activities, including sandbag collections for residents during storm season.
Housing for Change will be responsible for planning approvals and project delivery, with Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner confirming Council will cover survey and development application costs associated with the subdivision.
Modular construction will also be used to accelerate completion and ensure a more cost-effective outcome.
While community housing is primarily the responsibility of the State and Federal governments, the Schrinner Council is stepping up and doing what it can to support more homes sooner.
The partnership complements ongoing efforts to facilitate more housing supply through planning reforms, housing incentives and support for community housing projects across Brisbane.
Millions of dollars in Council infrastructure charges have already been waived to support social and affordable housing projects across Brisbane, including the recently completed Arq development at Stones Corner and the Curwen in Chermside.
