Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner is encouraging residents to put a spotlight on local waste-saving heroes and nominate them for the second annual WasteSMART Brisbane Awards.
Cr Schrinner said nominations were now open for local residents, communities and businesses who undertake ‘waste smart’ activities and practices that help reduce the amount of waste going into landfill.
“These awards recognise the individuals, community groups, schools, kindergartens and businesses that go above and beyond to improve education and take part in recycling, composting and other ways that minimise landfill,” he said.
“From Ethan Heng in Fitzgibbon who hosted three community clean up days with his mum, to the Howard Smith Wharves team that collectively stopped nearly 82 per cent of their waste from going into landfill, these awards recognise some of the best ‘waste smart’ heroes – both big and small.
“This year, there are eight award categories, 11 awards and a prize pool worth more than $4000. A new category has also been introduced – the ‘Outstanding WasteSMART Award’ – for those who have made their waste reduction consistent for more than three years.”
Nominations are open now until 3 September. The eight categories are:
- Brisbane’s WasteSMART Champion Award
- WasteSMART Community Award
- WasteSMART Business Award
- WasteSMART Early Learning Award
- WasteSMART Schools Award
- Outstanding WasteSMART Award
- Councillors’ WasteSMART Choice Award
- People’s Choice WasteSMART Award
Finalists will be judged by a panel of industry experts. The ‘People’s Choice WasteSMART Award’ will be strictly voted on by the public from 4 – 15 October.
A ceremony will be held at City Hall in November to announce the winners.
