Hot weather and recent rain have kickstarted the seven-day mowing schedule as the Schrinner Council prepares public spaces for summer.
More than 70,000 hectares of grass, including parks and roadsides, will now be mowed on a back-to-back fortnightly rotation, compared to the six to 10-week rotation during Brisbane’s drier winter months.
The Bureau of Meteorology has indicated South East Queensland can expect summer storms and hot weather which brings on rapid grass growth across backyards and parks.
By having a flexible mowing schedule and well-prepared mowing teams ready, the mowing program can increase from five days to seven days a week to combat the growing grass during wet and hot weather.
The peak season mowing schedule is anticipated to run from now until March, however significant rainfall or extended dry periods can disrupt mowing services, with work rescheduled as soon as conditions allow to prevent damage to turf or underlying soil.
The perfect conditions for mowing are sunny days and dry ground.
There are almost 40,000 sites on the fortnightly mowing schedule, including more than 2100 parks and more than 37,000 roadside sites.
Quotes attributable to Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner:
“Brisbane is Australia’s lifestyle capital and we work hard to maintain our more than 2100 parks across the suburbs so people can get outside and enjoy these spaces.
“Following recent hot weather and rain our hard-working mowing teams have increased their schedule to mow seven days a week to keep our public spaces looking great.
“Weather can be unpredictable over summer and sometimes rainfall brings the perfect conditions for grass growing, not mowing, which can impact the schedule.
“Residents will now start to see our mowing teams out and about in our parks more often and I want to thank the hardworking teams for making sure our suburbs remain the best place to live, work and relax.”
