Residents can dive into spring with a visit to one of Council’s 22 pools across Brisbane which are reopening for the season this Saturday.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said Council was expecting to see huge numbers of visitors making a splash throughout spring and summer, as pools reopened on 17 September for the warmer months.
“We’ve had more than 2 million visitors to our pools since January and we’re expecting those numbers to grow through spring and summer,” Cr Schrinner said.
“There’s learn to swim classes, aqua aerobics and plenty more to keep you cool this summer.
“With more than 20 pools across Brisbane most residents will find they’re never far from a public pool which can provide hours of low-cost and healthy fun.”
In preparation for this spring/summer season Council has delivered upgrades to the Chermside indoor pool, Ithaca Pool kiosk, and Sandgate Pool Cafe.
Refurbishment work on the 50m pool at Newmarket Pool is continuing and the kids slide, zero depth, toddlers and 25m pools are set to reopen to the community later this year. While this exciting upgrade is underway the program pools for swim lessons are still open.
While the 50m pool at Jindalee Pool remains closed due to flood damage earlier in the year, the 18m indoor pool has remained operational for the community.
Cr Schrinner said Council was currently working with the lessee of three pools across Brisbane to help make Brisbane cleaner, greener, and more sustainable.
“We have completed solar installations at Centenary Pool, Parkinson Pool and Colmslie Pool and are looking to start an installation at Runcorn Pool,” he said.
“This investment in Brisbane’s future will reduce the carbon emissions of the facilities by 5206 tonnes over the system’s lifetime – that’s equivalent to taking more than 1130 cars off the road for a year.”
Cr Schrinner reminded residents that everyone has a role to play when it comes to water safety.
“Whether you’re swimming at home, at a Council pool, rivers and lakes or at the beach, it’s important that you “keep watch” at all times.”
