A major upgrade of the notorious Lindum open level crossing is moving ahead, with early works starting from 15 June despite ongoing delays from the Albanese Government.
Early works are progressing, despite the Albanese Government failing to sign off on the final $65 million in funding needed for this critical safety upgrade.
Energex will relocate underground electrical cables near Lindum Station and along Lindum Road from June 15.
These works are expected to take around four months, weather permitting, as the site is prepared for major construction in 2027.
The upgrade has been shaped by extensive community consultation undertaken in late 2024, with local feedback informing the final design as well as additional safety improvements.
Two fatalities have happened at the level crossing in the past eight years, making this project a priority.
The project will improve safety and connectivity for residents, commuters, pedestrians and cyclists by:
• realigning the crossing,
• reducing vehicle speeds to 40km per hour on all road approaches
• and installing new traffic signals, pedestrian crossings and shared pathways.
These improvements build on the recently completed Lindum Station accessibility upgrade and the first stage of safety works already delivered at the crossing, including median islands, an extended boom gate and an improved road surface.
Brisbane is one of Australia’s fastest-growing cities, yet critical infrastructure funding continues to lag behind population growth.
While rail infrastructure is typically funded by State and Federal governments, Council has committed $40 million towards open level crossings across Brisbane.
Residents have been kept informed throughout planning, with strong community support shown for the next stage and its focus on improving safety.
While the previous Federal Government signed off on jointly funding the project with Brisbane City Council and the Queensland Government, the Albanese Government has so far refused to contribute the final $65 million in funding.
