The Schrinner Council is on track to have the city’s war memorials ready for ANZAC Day commemorations to honour those who served and sacrificed for our country.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said Council had worked hard to ensure the city’s war memorials were rejuvenated and restored following the recent severe flooding event.
“As ANZAC Day draws closer, we are continuing our preparation and maintenance works across the city to ensure people can pay their respects to those who have served our country,” Cr Schrinner said.
“Brisbane currently has 137 war memorials, and all but one will be open for this year’s ANZAC Day commemoration services with Kalinga Park, Clayfield remaining closed due to considerable damage sustained from flooding event.
“Some of the works that have been undertaken have been replanting gardens and floral displays, cleaning monuments, mulching, hedging and mowing.
“An upgrade to Bellbowrie’s Booker Place Park memorial will also be complete in time for Monday, weather permitting.
“Upgrades for the memorial include a central dais, flag poles, seating area, stone plinths, and connecting pathways.”
Cr Schrinner said commemorative services would be held across Brisbane, including the Dawn Service at ANZAC Square from 4.28am and the parade along Adelaide Street (between George and Creeks streets) from 9.30am.
“For residents unable to attend in person, there are many ways to commemorate,” he said.
“RSL Queensland is encouraging residents to commemorate by lighting up the dawn in their driveways or tuning in to the live streams of services happening throughout the day on RSL Queensland’s Light Up the Dawn website.
“For a historic look at our city’s links to the ANZAC spirit, residents can join a special Brisbane Greeters’ ANZAC Day tour departing from the front of City Hall in King George Square at 12:30pm.
“The one-hour long walking tour will guide participants through ANZAC Square, the Battle of Brisbane site, a copy of the signature wall at the Museum of Brisbane, the statue of General Glasgow and Macarthur Chambers and Museum.
“I encourage all residents to find their own way to commemorate and remember those who gave their lives in service to their country this year.”
