The penultimate traffic switch at Brisbane’s biggest road upgrade has been successfully completed with the project now more than 90 per cent complete.
The $257 million Moggill Road Corridor Upgrade will improve safety at one of Brisbane’s most dangerous suburban chokepoints, with the project jointly funded by the Australian Government and the Schrinner Council.
The latest traffic switch, the 26th traffic switch of the project, was completed on Monday with one lane of inbound traffic now able to travel under the newly created overpass.
Outbound traffic has been travelling under the overpass since July 2024.
Due to an unexpectedly wet spring, including more than 195mm of rain in the past two weeks, the final traffic switch will be planned for early 2025.
This final traffic switch will open the remaining inbound traffic lanes under the overpass.
Remaining works to finalise the corridor project are underway including the relocation of utility and stormwater services, installation of guardrails and barriers, activation of new traffic lights, landscaping and footpath works.
Final asphalting works will be delivered early next year, pending weather, to deliver new smooth roads throughout the intersection.
A team or more than 2500 highly skilled workers have completed more than 453,400 hours of work to date delivering the Moggill Road Corridor Upgrade, which included unforeseen complexity after an unmapped large water pipe that ran through the site was unearthed and had to be relocated.
Public utilities relocated as part of the project include:
- 5 kms of new Telstra cables
- 5 kms of new drainage pipes
- 1 km of new sewer pipes
- 3 kms of new water pipes
- 2 kms of underground Energex cabling
- 2kms of ITS network
Between both Moggill Road and Coonan Street, the intersection carries 55,000 vehicles a day, making it one of the most significant road corridors for Brisbane’s West.
More than 40 car crashes were recorded at the Moggill Road and Coonan Street intersection between 2013 and 2020, with 13 resulting in hospitalisations and 23 requiring medical treatment.
