Brisbane is powering ahead to become Australia’s first capital city with an e-mobility strategy, following a successful three-month consultation period that attracted more than 900 responses.
Public and Active Transport Chair Ryan Murphy said Brisbane residents were leaders when it came to embracing e-mobility, with more than 5000 e-scooter trips being taken each day, with number now exceeding pre-COVID levels.
“Brisbane is committed to being a leader in the e-mobility space by providing the knowledge and infrastructure required to support residents and visitors embracing these new modes of transport,” Cr Murphy said.
“Other cities like Sydney have simply said ‘no’ to e-scooters, and that may leave them worse off when it comes to understanding this rapidly growing mode of travel.
“It’s a testament to the forward thinking, progressive mindset of Brisbane residents who embrace change.
“Our e-mobility strategy attracted more than 900 pieces of feedback, including from significant stakeholders including RACQ, Bicycle Queensland and the Department of Transport and Main Roads. It’s clear that safety and infrastructure is at the forefront of everyone’s mind – including Council’s.
“In the coming months we will finalise the successful tender for the new e-bikes, in addition to e-scooters, and finalise our strategy to have clear guidelines around safety, accessibility and infrastructure.”
