More than 11,500 Brisbane residents have added a compost bin or worm farm to their home under Council’s compost rebate program.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the program was making a real difference when it comes to making Brisbane households cleaner and greener.
“Since the program was introduced in 2020, more than 11,500 households have been able to take up composting at home in a more affordable way,” Cr Schrinner said.
“It’s fantastic to see more and more households make conscious decisions to given their kitchen scraps a new life and limit the amount of food waste going into landfill.”
The program allows households to apply to receive a rebate of up to $70 when they purchase eligible composting and worm farming equipment. To date, residents have saved more than $790,000 under the program.
Eligible items purchased under the program include compost bins, worm farms, bokashi, in-ground composters and compost aerators.
Suburbs across Brisbane have been flexing their green thumbs with The Gap, Calamvale and Sunnybank Hills taking the top three spots when it comes to adopting composting at home.
Cr Schrinner said regardless of whether you live in a house or an apartment, there is a composting solution available to help reduce food waste and green waste going to landfill.
“Composting is for everyone, and not exclusive to those who have a large backyard,” he said.
“Recycling your food scraps, and other forms of green waste is a great way to make a positive impact on the environment and is something all households can do.
“Another major component of the program is education, to help residents succeed in their composting or worm farming journey.
“For those looking to get started, Council’s website has a range of instructional videos and resources filled with hints and tips to help people learn more about composting, as well as running free compost and worm farm workshops.
“I encourage everyone to begin their own composting journey at home, the small changes we all make will have a big impact on the environment and the Brisbane of tomorrow.”
