The Schrinner Council is safeguarding more of Brisbane’s precious bushland by securing another two hectares under the Bushland Acquisition Program.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the purchase would grow Brisbane’s reputation as Australia’s leafiest capital city.
“This two hectare Willawong site is a great addition to the more than 4320 hectares of bushland currently protected under our Bushland Acquisition Program,” Cr Schrinner said.
“As part of this program, we identify and purchase sites that contain important natural habitat, wildlife or threatened species or are part of ecological corridors, protecting them for generations to come.
“The latest addition – 75 Bowhill Road, Willawong – is home to mature bushland and critical ecosystems and is in the Oxley Creek corridor, Brisbane’s largest creek catchment.
“By purchasing this site, we’re able to ensure this area remains natural habitat, build on our commitment to restore and enhance Oxley Creek waterways and help achieve 40 per cent natural habitat cover in Brisbane by 2031.
“Along with being Australia’s fastest growing capital city, Brisbane is recognised as the nation’s greenest capital and our Bushland Acquisition Program is helping drive that result.”
Council has invested more than $350 million into purchasing and protecting land since the program began in 1990.
The Bushland Acquisition Program is funded through the Bushland Preservation Levy, included as part of residents’ rates bills.
Council protects approximately 10,000 hectares of natural areas across Brisbane including bushland reserves, wetlands and forests.
