From bars in the sunshine to alfresco eateries, Brisbane’s love affair with outdoor dining has only deepened in the face of COVID-19, with more restaurants, cafes and takeaways choosing to take their service to the streets.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schinner said there had been 124 new applications for footpath dining permits so far this year, as the hospitality industry looks for ways to adapt to the challenges of the pandemic.
“Restrictions around capacity and social distancing have meant businesses like restaurants, cafes, bakeries and takeaway shops have had to limit the number of customers they can cater for at any one time,” Cr Schrinner said.
“As a result, we’ve seen an increase in the number of food businesses wanting to increase their footprint and turnover by setting up additional tables and chairs on the footpath outside.
“The suburbs trump the city when it comes to demand for alfresco dining, with West End, Sandgate, Petrie Terrace, Annerley and Everton Park among the top locations for new applications this year.
“By taking their business to the streets, not only are our cafes and restaurants finding ways to adapt to the challenges, but they’re also helping to make our suburbs brighter, more vibrant and exciting places to be.”
Cr Schrinner said backing Brisbane’s hospitality industry was a crucial part of fast-tracking the city’s recovery from COVID-19.
“Since 1 July, more than 172 businesses, both new and renewing, have benefited from our 50 per cent discount on footpath dining fees, saving on average around $575 each,” he said.
“There’s no book on how to bounce back from a pandemic, but the Schrinner Council is committed to our city’s recovery, this financial year investing $58.3 million in local businesses and economic recovery initiatives.
“The new Brisbane app is also doing its part, by encouraging residents and visitors to explore the city and suburbs and support local businesses.
“Since launching the app in late September more than 180 guides added and now have a total of 1500 businesses for visitors to explore – all from their smartphone.”
