Thousands of new homes could be delivered in two of Brisbane’s major suburban centres under the next stage of the Schrinner Council’s anti-sprawl housing plan.
Suburban Renewal Precinct Plans have been announced for Chermside and Upper Mt Gravatt, encouraging more homes sooner in well-serviced locations close to jobs, transport, shops and services.
Each precinct could unlock thousands of new homes, helping Brisbane meet growing demand while protecting the character of surrounding suburbs.
Brisbane is one of Australia’s fastest growing cities, with around 600 people moving here every week.
Upper Mt Gravatt is serviced by turn-up-and-go Brisbane Metro services, while Chermside is supported by high-frequency bus services and has been identified for a future northern metro line in the State’s 2032 delivery plan.
The Schrinner Council’s housing plan focuses on growing up rather than out, by putting homes near jobs and transport to ease congestion and protect Brisbane’s character and natural areas.
The Chermside precinct will focus on the Gympie Road corridor between Rode Road and 7th Brigade Park.
The Upper Mt Gravatt precinct will cover a section of Dawson Road, extending through Mt Gravatt-Capalaba Road to Newnham Road.
This work builds on the Schrinner Council’s broader anti-sprawl housing program, including plans already complete in Stones Corner and underway in Wynnum Centre, Mt Gravatt and Alderley.
The Suburban Renewal Precincts program focuses on transforming under-utilised land into well-planned, mixed-use centres, building on the successful renewal of areas like West End, Teneriffe and New Farm.
These areas demonstrate how well-located renewal can deliver more homes, support local businesses and create strong, connected communities.
Initial community consultation will inform draft plans for Chermside and Upper Mt Gravatt.
These draft plans will be released for another round of community feedback.
Final plans are subject to State Government review.
