Fireworks never seen before in Queensland, including special waterfall and comet pyrotechnics, will light up Brisbane’s skyline this New Year’s Eve.
After being cancelled last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Deputy Mayor Krista Adams confirmed fireworks would be returning to Brisbane on December 31 with a spectacular 10-minute display at South Bank.
Cr Adams said the fireworks would be launched from three barges and two pontoons in the river between the Cultural Forecourt and River Quay at South Bank at 8.30pm and midnight.
“Brisbane is a fantastic place to celebrate New Year’s Eve, with hundreds of local cafés, restaurants and bars to choose from, parks and barbecues right across our suburbs and, of course, our incredible fireworks displays,” Cr Adams said.
“We were unable to have fireworks last year due to COVID, so we are excited for the display to return to South Bank this year with a family-friendly show at 8.30pm and then the midnight fireworks to ring in 2022.
“Having a river from which to launch our fireworks makes Brisbane’s display very special. This year, more than six tonnes of fireworks and more than 60,000 pyrotechnic effects will be launched.
“A highlight of this year’s show will be a special aquatic effect for the 8:30pm display – it will create a sea of red and green on the surface of the river.
“There will also be several Queensland-first fireworks including a special type of gold, cascading glitter waterfall and a gold comet-effect firework.”
Cr Adams reminded residents wanting to see the fireworks display at South Bank that there would be extra rules in place to ensure the celebrations run smoothly.
“South Bank Parklands will continue to be zoned alcohol free unless dining at one of the designated restaurants and bars,” she said.
“We want everyone to have a great night, but visitors to the parklands will be required to undergo a bag check upon entry.
“Tickets aren’t required and there are no crowd limits, however we’d recommend everyone plans ahead with gates opening from 10am on the day.
“For those not heading into South Bank, Brisbane’s neighbourhoods are colourful, thriving places so why not welcome in 2022 by booking a table at your local café, restaurant or bar.
“Our hospitality industry has had a tough couple of years and by dining out you’ll be supporting these small businesses along with the jobs they create.’
