Residents can be better prepared and improve their flood awareness and resilience with Council’s new Flood Information Online tool.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the new interactive online flood tool has been designed to make it easier for residents to use and find the information that matters.
“The online hub gives residents the latest flood information in a new-look interactive way so it is easier for people to visually understand flooding and how it may affect where they live or work,” Cr Schrinner said.
“We are making sure Council’s best available flood risk information is available to anyone who wants it at the click of a button.
“We have used the best tools and technology available to deliver the most comprehensive and user-friendly maps.
“To generate the new maps there were nearly 1100 on the ground surveys completed, alongside 21 hydrology models and 21 hydraulic models.
“The new Flood Awareness Map has been updated to better display information with clearer navigation, simpler language, and improved functionality across devices.
“The online tool also includes a new historic flood layer displaying the extent of the February 2022 flood with mapping for both river and creek flooding included.”
Cr Schrinner said the updated FloodWise Property Report will be easier for residents to visually understand how flooding may affect a property for building and development.
“More than 540,000 residents downloaded property reports between January and May this year so we know this update will be a popular feature for residents wanting to be better prepared,” he said.
Cr Schrinner said Council will ensure residents can access the best possible information in flood education and awareness.
“We can never stop severe weather, but we can be better prepared and these new flood maps will help residents have a better understanding and be better prepared,” he said.
“Understanding the risk of flooding helps people not get caught off guard and gives them the time to better design and plan for any risk.”
Cr Schrinner also strongly urged residents to sign up for the free Brisbane Severe Weather Alerts.
“More than 11,750 residents have signed up for the free alerts since the February flood event, but it remains important if you’re not registered to sign up so you can be prepared,” he said.
The Council competition offering a range of prizes, including a family trip to Tangalooma, is still open for anyone who signs up before 1 December 2022.
