Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner will today officially welcome more than 100 people from refugee backgrounds at an official ceremony held at Brisbane City Hall.
Cr Schrinner said the event, now in its 15th year, was a great way to celebrate the contribution of refugees to our diverse multicultural community.
“Council has a long-standing commitment to supporting and assisting refugees from their initial through to after they’ve settled in our wonderful city,” he said.
“We pride ourselves on being both welcoming and inclusive to all people, and we’re proud of our diversity and rich cultural life in Brisbane.
“This event also provides an important opportunity for new arrivals to meet other community leaders and access information on a range of programs and services available to them.
“I’d like to welcome all our new residents to Brisbane and encourage refugees to take advantage of everything our friendly city has to offer.”
Cr Schrinner said Council would continue to work closely with other agencies to provide ongoing support to refugee settlements while also engaging with our multicultural community.
“We also provide a number of initiatives and services on our website designed to assist refugees in settling here including translating and interpreting services, and a new resident guide,” he said.
“Our libraries also offer activities including free internet training, English conversation groups and collections in a variety of different languages.”
