The Schrinner Council is bringing more to see and do to the suburbs on Saturday with the newly restored historical Witton Barracks to host a free community open day.
The heritage-listed former World War II military site was returned to the community for use in March following its restoration and transformation into a space that helps residents work, connect and create in the suburbs, adding to Brisbane’s unbeatable lifestyle.
Brisbane based non-for-profit White Box Enterprises operates the space which has already had more than 1500 residents pass through the doors to enjoy of the community spaces and expansive public grounds.
The free family-friendly Witton Barracks Open Day will be held on Saturday 31 August and have live music, food stalls, kids activities including face painting and magic shows, and market stalls from local social enterprises.
Residents can also learn about the history of the Witton Barracks with free tours from the Brisbane Greeters running on demand throughout the day.
The Schrinner Council’s restoration of the Witton Barracks created a practical facility that retains its connection to its past and included a refresh of the heritage cell blocks into bookable meeting or exhibition spaces, creating a multi-use facility within the former HQ building and landscaping the grounds to include a playground and picnic shelter.
The Witton Barracks Open Day is proudly sponsored by Brisbane City Council, Westpac Foundation and Good People.
The refurbishment of the Witton Barracks has been jointly funded by the Australian Government and Brisbane City Council.
