More than 20 community clubs and environmental groups will benefit from the latest round of the Schrinner Council’s more than $1.2 million sustainability and environmental grant scheme.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the Bulimba Creek Catchment Co-ordinating Committee, Ocean Crusaders and Chermside Bowls Club were among the 23 groups sharing in $200,000 in grants.
“From creek restoration and weed control to replanting creek beds and installing wildlife habitat boxes, this grant program supports those on the ground at the heart of our city’s environmental recovery,” Cr Schrinner said.
“Recipients include The Hut and Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious Environment Protection Associations, the Ocean Crusaders Foundation as well as Kholo Creek, Bulimba Creek, Oxley Creek, Cubberla-Witton and Save our Waterways catchment crews.”
Cr Schrinner said the grants program helps community clubs undertake energy-efficient upgrades so they could save on power bills.
“The floods hit our community groups hard with the damage bill exceeding more than $100 million,” he said.
“These grants will help clubs permanently reduce their power bill which is one of their most significant costs.
“Grant recipients including Hockey Queensland in Morningside, Salisbury and Chermside Bowls Clubs and The Community Place in Northgate, will be able to install a range of energy-efficient upgrades and solar to help lower bills.”
Other community organisations supported under the grants program include the Mt Gravatt Lapidary Society and the Queensland Ornithological Society.
The Lord Mayor’s Community, Sustainability and Environmental Grants program includes four categories: Sustainability Grants, Environmental Grants, Native Wildlife Carer Grants and Cultivating Community Gardens Grants.
The $200,000 in Environmental and Sustainability grants being awarded in this round follows the Native Wildlife Carer Grants and Cultivating Community Gardens Grants, which awarded 37 recipients in December.
