A free green waste drop-off weekend will be held every month in spring for the first time as part of Council’s bushfire preparedness plan for Brisbane.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said with the likelihood of El Nino weather pattern and bushfires developing, Council had reformed free green waste tipping weekends to make them even easier for residents to access.
“Brisbane is a clean, green and sustainable city that has had a surge in green waste recycling over the past five years,” Cr Schrinner said.
“There has been a more than 30 per cent increase in the green waste taken directly to our four Resource Recovery Centres and an almost 50 per cent increase in green waste recycled via household green bins between 2018-19 and 2022-23.
“With unpredictable weather ahead of us, it is more important than ever that residents clean up their properties and prepare for the potential El Nino forecast and increased fire risk, but also for the usual summer storm season.
“To make it easier and more affordable for residents to be prepared, we will be expanding our free green waste tipping weekends to one weekend in every month of spring.
“This change from consecutive weekends to once-a-month drop off weekends throughout spring will give residents ample time to clean up and correctly dispose of as much household garden waste as they want at no cost.”
“Council is getting prepared for bushfires and unpredictable weather, and we are asking households to do the same.
“This year to date, Council has completed 17 planned burns, cut grass across more than 3150 hectares of fire breaks and completed maintenance on more than 128 kilometres worth of fire tracks and trails.”
More than 427,800 tonnes of green waste, the equivalent of more than 740 full A380s aircrafts, had been recycled by Council over the past five years.
An estimated 8420 people made use of free tipping weekends last year, disposing of more than 1500 tonnes of green waste, and saving almost $118,000 in tipping fees.
Cr Schrinner encouraged residents to clean out their gutters and cut back overgrown vegetation around their properties.
“This is a chance for residents to protect themselves, and their property at no cost.” he said.
“Residents can drop-off palm fronds, weeds, tree and shrub prunings, loose bark and grass clippings to any one of our four resource recovery centres as part of the free drop off weekends.
“Green waste is then turned into mulch and compost, saving green waste from storm water drains and landfill.”
Outside of these free waste weekends, residents can use their waste vouchers to dispose of their green waste or register for Council’s green waste recycling service which has been recently reduced to cost less than $1 a week.
