Brisbane residents are encouraged to take advantage of the Schrinner Council’s final free green waste drop-off weekend.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said Council had held a free green waste drop-off weekend each month during spring to help residents prepare ahead of bushfire season.
“Brisbane residents know only too well that our city receives more than its fair share of severe weather and it’s crucial to prepare,” Cr Schrinner said.
“This season the warning from authorities is about bushfires and already there’s been some really harrowing examples of fires on the Sunshine Coast and at Tara.
“Removing dry green waste and excess shrubbery, leaves, palm fonds and branches helps reduce the fuel load in the event of a fire and lower the risk.
“Council is getting prepared for bushfires. We’ve already completed 17 planned burns, covering more than 342.25 hectares this year and these weekends help residents undertake their own preparations at no cost.”
Cr Schrinner said the free green waste weekend would apply to Council’s four resource recovery centres at Chandler, Nudgee, Willawong and Ferny Grove.
“We know times are tough and prices are continuing to rise, and that’s why we started our free green waste tipping weekends back in September,” he said.
“By holding free green waste tipping weekends over three months, we’re giving residents several opportunities to take advantage of this cost saving.
“Not only is this essential for severe weather preparations but it’s also a win for sustainability by reducing waste to landfill and it’s certainly a win for the wallet.”
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said residents had already recycled more than 78,000 tonnes of green waste this year – equivalent to more than 15,600 Toyota HiLux.
“Brisbane is a clean, green and sustainable city and we want to see residents taking advantage of our green initiatives, including our half price green bins at less than $1 per week,” Cr Schrinner said.
“The green waste that ends up in our Resource Recovery Centres is mulched and composted to be reused in gardens and farms, turning it into a valuable resource.”
Outside of these free waste weekends, residents can use their waste vouchers to dispose of their green waste or register for Council’s green waste recycling service which has been recently reduced to cost less than $1 a week.
