Brisbane’s senior residents are invited to experience a smorgasbord of free and affordable activities to celebrate Seniors Month.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said this was a bumper year in Council’s Seniors Month program, with more than 480 free and affordable activities on offer.
“We know the rising cost-of-living is impacting households across Brisbane and these activities have been organised with budget front-of-mind,” Cr Schrinner said.
“Brisbane’s senior residents will be able to enjoy a range of activities and events that are not only fun but easy on purse strings.
“From cabaret galas to windsurfing and podcasting to photography, there’s truly something to suit all interests and abilities.
“More than 370 of these events are free and the rest come in at under $8, so this program is seriously light on the hip pocket.
“We live in the best city in the world, and I want all residents to be able to experience it, regardless of their age or household budget.
“I hope Brisbane’s older residents will jump in and experience our incredible program of events this Seniors Month.”
Cr Schrinner said the popularity of Council’s seniors’ events speaks for itself with the ‘Growing Old and Living Dangerously’ events surpassing 54,000 participants in the past year.
“These are the residents who have given so much to our community – they’re caring for grandkids, volunteering for charities and helping community causes,” he said.
“This month is about celebrating them, and I would love to see even more residents out enjoying everything our city has to offer. They can even travel there for free during off-peak times on Brisbane City Council buses and ferries.”
Community, Arts and Nighttime Economy Chair Councillor Vicki Howard said age was no barrier to experiencing the best Brisbane has to offer.
“We would love to see even more seniors getting active and healthy during Seniors Month and there’s a huge choice of events including Tai Chi, yoga, aqua aerobics, and even stand-up paddleboarding and windsurfing,” Cr Howard said.
“If you’d rather exercise the mind, why not check out the events on offer at Council’s 33 libraries, such as brain training, podcasting for seniors, and an introduction to memoir and life writing session.
“There will be special events held for Grandparent’s Day, which falls on the last Sunday of the month, including a special bush kindy day at Council’s discovery centres in Karawatha and Boondall and a photography session and clay event.”
