Three sports clubs will undertake significant improvements to their facilities under the latest funding round of the Schrinner Council’s Community and Sport Partnership Program.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said $600,000 was being shared between Downey Park Netball Association, Sandgate-Redcliffe District Cricket Club and Wests Mitchelton Rugby League Football Club.
“Clubs like these are critical parts of their communities because they help people of all ages be active and involved in their local area,” Cr Schrinner said.
“That’s why we’re committed to this program because it helps these clubs thrive and meet the growing demand for their valued services.
“The program partners with community clubs on Council-leased sites to help fund significant improvements to enhance facilities, ensuring that they are fit for purpose and can meet the increasing demand for sporting participation.”
Under the latest round of this program, Downey Park Netball Association will receive $400,000 to help convert eight existing grass netball courts to hardstand courts, Sandgate-Redcliffe District Cricket Club will receive $150,000 to upgrade their practice nets and Wests Mitchelton Rugby League Football Club will receive $50,0000 towards improvement works to their playing fields.
The program will invest a total of $6.6 million over four years into Council-leased facilities. Previous recipients include Wynnum Wolves Football Club, GPS Rugby League Inc, and Valley District Cricket Club Inc. Cr Schrinner said significantly more investment will be needed for community and sporting clubs impacted by the recent devastating floods.
“Every level of government has a stake in ensuring local communities are active and engaged,” Cr Schrinner said.
“That’s why I’ve written to the State and Federal governments seeking their support on a joint deal to help dozens of flood-affected community organisations in Brisbane get back on their feet.”
Cr Schrinner said his Council has handed out more than $1 million in emergency funding to help community clubs clean up.
“We’ve been able to support more than 220 organisations with $5000 cash payments totalling $1.1 million as part of the Community Facility Disaster Relief Payment program,” he said.
“However, this also demonstrates the massive rebuilding effort that’s required to help our clubs and community organisations fully recover.”
