Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has extended the deadline for flood-affected property owners to apply for a $250 rebate until Thursday June 30.Cr Schrinner said despite more than $3.7 million being approved for almost 15,000 residents already, he was eager to ensure all eligible home owners received the rebate.
“Following one of our biggest-ever flood events, we postponed rates for a month and rolled out the $250 rebate to provide immediate support to hard-hit residents and businesses,” he said.
“Coupled with the pandemic and rising costs of living, we know that months on from this devastating event, a full financial recovery for those affected is still difficult.
“To ensure no one misses out on the opportunity to receive this financial relief, we’ve extended the deadline to Thursday 30 June.
“I urge those eligible to apply now to receive the rebate on their next rates notice online or by calling Council on 3403 8888.”
Cr Schrinner said the February floods affected more than 23,000 properties across 177 suburbs and providing relief was critical.
“This $250 rebate is more than double what was provided during the 2011 floods and has reduced the average quarterly rates bill for flood victims to $183,” he said.
“Across the city, we’ve seen the biggest take up of this relief in West End, Brisbane City, St Lucia, Deagon and Toowong.”
In addition the rates rebate and as part of the 2022-23 Budget, the Schrinner Council announced a new $1000 rates rebate for eligible owner occupiers whose homes remain uninhabitable after the February floods.
Ratepayers are eligible for the $250 rebate if they owned a property on 26 February 2022 that was impacted by the severe weather event. Vacant or government-owned land is not eligible. A special 60-day additional due date extension remains available for flood victims experiencing financial hardship.
