Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has welcomed an independent report that says Brisbane will grow faster than any other ‘mature’ world city by 2020.
Cr Qurik said the report by Jones Lang La Salle "A New World of Cities: Redefining the Real Estate Investment Map" provides further evidence that Brisbane is on track to be one of the world's most prosperous cities.
Brisbane was ranked number one for expected gross domestic product growth from 2012 to 2020. Perth was the only other Australian city to make the Top 20 list that includes cities with a population of more than one million people and with a "mature property market".
“I'm delighted that we have been identified as No. 1 of the 20 fastest growing mature cities ahead of Singapore, Austin and Hong Kong,” said Cr Quirk.
“These findings also support Brisbane's strategic national advertising campaign themed Brisbane is Growth, which commenced last week targeting business leaders and decisionmakers in Australian capital cities, highlighting Brisbane's growing and robust $114 billion economy.
“With one council, one set of rules, over 1 million residents and a $3 billion budget covering 1387km2, we're working hand-in-hand with industry to double our capital city economy to $217 billion by 2031.
“Part of my vision for a prosperous Brisbane is to ensure my Council continues to work closely with industry to leverage a strong return on our ongoing infrastructure investment creating jobs, attracting the world's best talent, driving investment and encouraging new enterprise and export growth.”
The Brisbane is Growth campaign is one of many initiatives recommended by the Lord Mayor’s Economic Development Steering Committee, developed in consultation with over 200 local businesses, to encourage economic development and create jobs to continue growing Brisbane’s $114 billion economy.
On 14 February, the Lord Mayor will launch the Brisbane Economic Development Plan 2012 - 2031, a blueprint for the city's economic growth during the next 20 years.
