Fresh funding for secret Men's business

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has announced a $67,000 funding boost for community men’s groups across Brisbane, including the Carina Men’s Shed.

The Lord Mayor said the Men’s Shed grants were just another way Council was investing in community groups and infrastructure for local residents.

“We’re delivering more for local suburbs than ever before and our Men’s Shed program is a vital part of Council’s ongoing support of networks catering for the health, social and emotional needs of residents across Brisbane,” Cr Quirk said.

“I want Brisbane to be Australia’s most open and inclusive city and our commitment to social projects like these are vital in giving residents the opportunity to participate in their local community.

“The funds provided in these grants will go to improving facilities in these sheds, kickstarting new projects, and helping to buy equipment and materials for participants to enjoy new activities,” he said.

Local Councillor Adrian Schrinner said the Carina Men’s Shed would benefit with $20,000 in funding for their facility at the Clem Jones Centre.

“The Carina Men’s Shed plays an important role in providing a supportive, low-key environment for men of all ages to get together, work on a hobby and have some fun,” he said.

“In particular I’m proud to support the shed’s interest in working with disadvantaged young people and the local Indigenous community.”

The group will use the grant to fit-out their new shed facilities and purchase woodworking tools and equipment.

Since initiating the program in 2009, Council has invested more than $351,000 in Men’s Sheds across Brisbane.
