Councils work together on Rochedale pedestrian safety project

Much-needed pedestrian safety improvements on a notorious boundary road between Logan and Brisbane City Councils are earmarked for construction thanks to funding commitments from both councils.

Councillor Adrian Schrinner has welcomed the works, saying they were crucial to help improve safety for students walking to the numerous local schools in the area.

"This project is a good example of adjoining councils working together to deliver vital road safety improvements on boundary roads," he said.

"This particular intersection has been an area of concern for some time and the improvements to the pedestrian refuge will help improve the safety of our local schoolchildren - in turn assisting the walk to school initiatives of the nearby schools."

Logan Division One Councillor, Lisa Bradley, said she was pleased to confirm work would shortly commence to upgrade the pedestrian refuge on Priestdale Rd, just east of the intersection with Rochedale Rd, to provide an interim solution to the safety concerns in the area.

"This crucial upgrade has been high on my priorities for some time and I'm hopeful the next step will ultimately see improvements to the intersection itself," she said.

"The current crossing, which caters for a high level of both pedestrian and vehicle traffic particularly from the large number of nearby schools, is a cause of concern and is in need of a major upgrade.

"Logan City Council will manage and deliver the project and the scope of the works will include crucial upgrades to the pedestrian refuge area itself, to increase its prominence, as well as road widening and kerb and channel and footpath construction in the immediate vicinity of the refuge.

Construction work will get underway shortly and it is hoped the upgrades will be completed in time for the new school year.

Cr Bradley said the upgrade would see an investment of $92,500 to deliver the improvement works necessary to mitigate pedestrian safety concerns.

"Boundary roads are a shared responsibility under the Local Government Act and sets a 50:50 funding requirement, with councils working together to address safety issues.
