Protecting our local environment
The Chandler Ward is characterised by areas of natural bushland and numerous parks and conservation reserves.
Local suburbs like Belmont, Burbank, Chandler and Gumdale are often said to be part of Brisbane’s ‘green belt’ or ‘green lungs’.
Brisbane City Council is working to protect these bushland areas for future generations in a number of important ways, including;
- Council has zoned large tracts of land as Environment Protection Areas in the City Plan to prevent further sub-division
- Council has a major program to plant 2 million trees across the city by 2012, including local planting sites in Chandler, Carindale and Carina Heights
- Council continues to purchase private land to create new conservation reserves through the Bushland Acquisition Program
Since 1990, the Brisbane City Council has invested more than $42 million into purchasing and protecting bushland within the Chandler Ward.
To date, more than 764 hectares (7.64 million square metres or 1887 acres) of local bushland has been protected for future generations.
The funds for these purchases were raised through the Bushland Preservation Levy, which was first introduced by former Lord Mayor, Sallyanne Atkinson.
